No surface image, non-interlocking jigsawsThese puzzles exploit aspects of visual perception, including background/foreground switches, illusory borders, and subjective figures. To fit pieces the puzzler must match curves, a task that most people find more difficult than matching the sockets and knobs of interlocking puzzles. Assembly is complicated by the fact that the up and down sides of the pieces are not known (all pieces are dark on one side and pale on the other). In addition, the wood grain may run in more than one direction, and slithers of wood may be omitted from the completed puzzle.
